Youngsters star in Over the Rainbow at De Montfort Hall Leicester to Raise Funds for Rainbows

More than 200 young performers went Over the Rainbow to raise funds for Rainbows hospice at Leicester's De Montfort Hall in a different look at a favourite musical. Leicestershire Arts Dance Activate took the classic Wizard of Oz, which has already inspired hit spin-offs such as The Wiz and Wicked to present W'Oz, which featured dancers aged three to 18.

The show raised £1,600 for Rainbows, the appropriately-named local charity which organisers had in mind when they began the project.Arts advisor Jane Fletcher, wife of LADA founder and director Graham, said: "It was a new look at the famous story. Everybody has heard of the Wizard of Oz and we wanted something which was meaningful for children."We had six Dorothys, an 11-year-old Tin Man on roller-skates, reminiscent of Starlight Express, our Mohican-wearing Cowardly Lion sang I Just Can't Wait To Be King, from the Lion King, and Toto was a French poodle."

Jane said younger cast members were taken into the audience after their stint on stage to watch the others perform."To be on the go all the time would have been too much for the tinier ones but they enjoyed seeing part of the show and then going back on to take their bow," added Jane, who said De Montfort Hall was an excellent venue for the production. She said the show gave the children a fascinating glimpse into the exciting and magical world of professional theatre. She said: "We thought it was appropriate our production, which was for children and performed by children, should benefit a charity for children, so we chose Rainbows, which also fitted in with the Wizard of Oz connection.

Dance Activate End of Year Show

On July 9th and 11th we held our End of Year Show which showcased all of our dance groups. Both nights were fantastic occasions for all concerned, including students, children, teachers, parents, guardians and friends.

The two nights have been videoed and there are DVD and Blu-ray versions available to purchase.

Please note: the DVD version has both nights on the one disc and should work in most DVD players and PCs. The Blu-ray versions are of a much higher picture quality and are split over two discs (one disc for each night) but will only play in a Blu-ray player.

Please contact Graham if you would still like to purchase a copy.
